How to Read a Mushroom Supplement Label

The short version on mushroom labels

Four things tell you most of what you need to know. Does the label say fruiting body or mycelium? Does it give you a beta-glucan number, or only a polysaccharide number? Is there an extract ratio, and does the company explain what it means? And will they show you a certificate of analysis? A label that stays vague on all four has told you something, even if it never says it outright.

Mushroom supplements are one of the easiest categories in which to sell something technically accurate and practically misleading. Nothing on the label has to be false for the overall impression to be wrong. Here is how to read one properly.

Fruiting body or mycelium: the difference that decides everything else

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself, the part you would recognise growing on a log. Mycelium is the root-like network underneath. Both are real parts of the same organism, and neither is fraudulent in principle. The problem is how mycelium is usually produced for the supplement market.

It is typically grown on sterilised grain, most often brown rice, and then the whole mass is dried and milled together. The grain never gets separated out, because it cannot be. So a bottle listing organic lion's mane mycelium may be mostly starch by weight, and the label is not lying when it says what it says.

Look for the words fruiting body, stated plainly. Then notice what is missing. Full spectrum, whole food and mycelial biomass are marketing phrases, not specifications. When a label reaches for those instead of naming the part used, that is usually a choice rather than an oversight. We go deeper into the science of it in our piece on fruiting body versus mycelium.

Why beta-glucans and polysaccharides are not the same claim

This is the most common substitution on a mushroom label, and it is worth understanding precisely rather than roughly.

Beta-glucans are a specific family of polysaccharides, and they are what most functional mushroom research actually studies. Polysaccharide is a far broader category, and it includes starch. Which means a product grown on rice can report an impressive total polysaccharide figure that is substantially explained by the rice it grew in.

A label that says thirty percent polysaccharides is telling you very little. A label that says twenty-five percent beta-glucans is telling you something specific, and something that could be checked. The testing method matters too. Enzymatic assays built for beta-glucans return very different numbers than older colorimetric methods that pick up other sugars along the way, and a company that paid for the better test usually says so.

What an extract ratio actually tells you

You will see numbers like 8:1 or 10:1. The ratio describes how much raw material went into one part of finished extract, so an 8:1 extract means eight kilograms of dried mushroom produced one kilogram of the thing in the bottle.

Two cautions come with that. A higher ratio is not automatically better, because the number describes concentration rather than which compounds survived the process or whether the starting material was any good to begin with. And a ratio only means anything if the starting material is named. An 8:1 extract of mycelium on grain is an eightfold concentration of something that was largely grain already. Ratio plus plant part plus a beta-glucan figure is a real specification. A ratio on its own is closer to decoration.

Hot water, alcohol, or both

Beta-glucans are water soluble and usually come out with hot water. Some other constituents come out better with alcohol. Products described as dual extracted have been through both.

There is a genuine trade-off here rather than one right answer. Alcohol reaches compounds that water cannot, and it also leaves residual alcohol in the finished product, which matters to some people and not at all to others. Glycerin avoids that but has its own limits on what it pulls. Every method involves a compromise, and a label pretending otherwise is overselling.

Certificates of analysis, and what to ask for

A certificate of analysis is a lab report on one specific production batch. A meaningful one covers identity, beta-glucan content, heavy metals and microbial testing, and it carries a lot number you can match to the bottle in your hand.

A few things give the game away. A certificate with no lot number is not connected to your product. One dated three years ago describes a batch you did not buy. And a company that will not send you one when you ask has already answered your question. Under US dietary supplement regulation, manufacturers set and verify their own specifications for identity, purity, strength and composition, which puts a great deal of weight on what each company chooses to test for and how honestly it reports what came back.

Check the serving size before you look at the milligrams, because a large-sounding dose spread across four capsules is a different product from the same dose in one. Watch for proprietary blends, where several ingredients are grouped under a single total and you cannot know how much of each you are getting. Sometimes that protects a genuine formulation. More often it hides a token amount of whatever is pictured on the front.

Read the other ingredients line, since that is where fillers, flow agents and preservatives live, and a short list there is a real signal. And notice where the mushroom was grown, because mushrooms are efficient accumulators of whatever sits in their substrate, which is precisely why sourcing and heavy metal testing matter more in this category than in most.

The short checklist

Before you buy, confirm the label states the part used, gives a beta-glucan figure rather than only a polysaccharide figure, explains any extract ratio in terms of named starting material, discloses the extraction method, and is backed by a batch-matched certificate you can actually obtain. A product that clears all five is not automatically right for you. But a product that clears none of them has told you how it competes.

Frequently asked questions

Is mycelium always worse than fruiting body? Not inherently, but mycelium grown on grain and sold without separating the grain is a weaker product by beta-glucan content. Liquid-fermented mycelium separated from its medium is a different and more defensible thing. Labels rarely distinguish the two, which is the practical problem.

What beta-glucan percentage should I look for? Quality fruiting body extracts commonly test in the twenty to forty percent range, while mycelium-on-grain products often come in far lower. Treat a stated number as more informative than a high one, because a stated number means somebody measured it.

Does a higher extract ratio mean a stronger product? Not reliably. The ratio describes concentration of starting material, not potency of any particular compound, and without a named starting material and a beta-glucan figure it is not enough to judge strength.

Why do some labels list polysaccharides instead of beta-glucans? Sometimes it reflects an older testing method. Sometimes it simply produces a bigger number, because total polysaccharides can include starch from a grain substrate. Either way it is a less specific claim.

Should I be concerned about heavy metals in mushroom supplements? It is worth checking rather than worth panicking about. Mushrooms take up minerals efficiently from their growing substrate, so sourcing and batch testing genuinely matter here. Ask for a certificate that includes heavy metal results.

What does dual extracted mean? That the product went through both a hot water extraction and an alcohol extraction, to capture water-soluble and alcohol-soluble constituents. It is a legitimate method whose trade-off is residual alcohol in the finished product.
