How to Choose a Supplement Brand: A Buyer's Checklist

The short version of this checklist
The questions that actually separate supplement companies are who made it, what was tested, whether you can see the results, and what the label declines to tell you. Certifications, packaging and clinical-sounding language are cheap. Batch-level test results tied to the bottle in your hand are not. Below is the full list, including the criteria where we do not come out on top.
Do they publish batch-level testing?
This is the highest-signal question, which is why it goes first.
A certificate of analysis is a lab report on a specific production lot. A meaningful one carries a lot number you can match to your bottle, a recent date, and a named testing laboratory, and it covers identity, potency, heavy metals and microbial contamination.
The failure modes are worth naming. A certificate with no lot number is unconnected to your product. One from three years ago describes a batch you did not buy. And a company that will not send one when asked has answered the question. Third-party tested printed on a box, with no document behind it, is a marketing phrase rather than a fact.
Does the label name the part and the species?
For mushrooms, fruiting body or mycelium. For botanicals, root, leaf, aerial parts or whole plant. Plus the Latin binomial, because common names are ambiguous and often shared across unrelated plants.

Are the active compounds quantified, or only implied?
Beta-glucans rather than polysaccharides. Withanolides rather than potent extract. Elemental magnesium rather than total compound weight, a distinction that trips up an enormous number of buyers.
A number means somebody measured something. An adjective means somebody wrote something.
Is the dose in the range that was actually studied?
Fairy dusting is the practice of including a recognisable ingredient at a fraction of the researched dose so it can appear on the front of the label. It is extremely common in blends, and it is easy to check if you are willing to spend two minutes.
Look up the dose used in the human trials, then read the panel. If the product contains a tenth of it, the ingredient is there for the label rather than for you. Proprietary blends make this impossible to check, which is frequently the point of them.

What is on the other ingredients line?
Fillers, binders, flow agents, artificial colours and preservatives all live here. Some are functionally necessary and harmless. A long list on an otherwise simple product is worth a second look.
Do they say what their product does not do?
This one is softer but genuinely predictive. Companies confident in their product will tell you who it is not for, where the evidence is thin, and what trade-offs their manufacturing choices involve.
Marketing copy in which every ingredient is revolutionary and nothing has a downside is describing a product that does not exist. We try to hold ourselves to that standard, which is why our pieces on alcohol-free extraction and the lion's mane evidence both state their limitations plainly.
Can you find out who actually makes it?
Most supplement brands do not manufacture anything. They contract with a facility that does, which is normal and not a criticism. What matters is whether that facility follows current Good Manufacturing Practices, whether it has been inspected, and whether the brand can speak knowledgeably about its own production.
A brand that cannot describe how its product is made, in specifics, is a marketing company with a supplier.
Do the reviews look like they came from people?
Real review sets include three-star reviews, complaints about taste or packaging, and responses from the company. A wall of five-star, similarly worded reviews with no negatives at all is a pattern worth noticing rather than an endorsement.
What do the certifications actually certify?
They are not equivalent and the differences matter. USDA Organic covers agricultural inputs and says nothing about potency or heavy metals. NSF and USP verify label accuracy and contaminant screening, which is meaningful and relatively rare in this category. Non-GMO Project addresses genetic modification only. A cGMP facility is a legal requirement rather than an achievement. And doctor formulated and clinically proven have no fixed definitions at all, so ask which doctor and which trial.
Where we do not come out on top
A checklist that conveniently ranks us first would not be worth reading, so here are the honest limitations.
We do not hold NSF or USP certification. Those programmes are expensive and slow, and larger companies are better positioned to carry them. If that specific certification is your bar, we do not clear it.
Alcohol-free glycerin extraction involves real trade-offs. Alcohol reaches some constituents that glycerin does not. We chose glycerin deliberately and we think the reasoning holds, but a dual-extracted product is not simply worse; it is a different set of compromises.
We are a small company, which means more direct answers when you email us and less scale in testing volume than a large manufacturer has.
And some of our formulations are deliberately simpler than our competitors'. If you want a twelve-mushroom blend, we are not that. We would rather do fewer things at a dose that matches the research.
The three-minute version
If you only do three things: ask for a batch-matched certificate of analysis, check that the label names the plant part and quantifies the active compound, and compare the dose against the dose used in human trials. Those three questions eliminate most of what is wrong with this category.
